In this episode I want to talk about is something I was doing last week, I ran my monthly Podcast Guesting Prep School. That’s where I gather with ambitious entrepreneurs and social impact leaders who want to strategically use podcast guesting as a foundational part of a bigger media campaign. So they can powerfully establish their authority, and in the words of some of the participants own their space. And that is exactly what your podcast guessing should be a planned calculated series of appearances that gets you seen and heard in all the right places that you need to be found. And by all the right people, that’s going to help you achieve your business goals, starting with podcast appearances, since it is the most accessible form of media for you to get started with this, and then eventually spinning that out into a mix of tools including, particularly podcast, but also radio, print, TV, and speaking, live and virtual in front of the right audiences.

I love helping entrepreneurs find the strategy that’s right for them for how they’re going to do this. I have years of professional experience producing strategic communication and content that is psychologically designed to change the way people see the world to have impact to persuade, and to change minds as a consultant for both podcasters and for people using podcast guesting I draw on that experience to give my clients the tools strategy, and the plan for a media campaign that’s going to make them but go to authority in their field. And to do that, to get started,
you need to know what you want to achieve with his media campaign that you’re embarking on. We had a ton of things come out over the course of the podcast guessing prep school workshop, and some of the things people want to achieve were to rise from obscurity and get known to make strategic connections to promote a product or book a service to rise above their competition to build a strong network. establish their authority and expertise. Find an audience launch a speaking career, elevate status and reputation. Get and leverage bigger and bigger media coverage. Reframe the narrative repositioning themselves in the issues that they represent, to own their space, to challenge the status quo, to start a movement.
Whatever your goals are, even if you have not quite perhaps articulated them quite yet, even to yourself.
Figuring that out is the starting point of the three day podcast guesting perhaps go workshop. And in the workshop, I get started by giving people a vision of what is actually possible, what can be achieved when you create that media campaign with podcast guest appearances as that entry point and foundation. From that vision, then we go on to get clarity on how you can take some of those techniques that they’ve been shown, and how you can match them up with some of your business goals to achieve them. But
on that first day, that vision quest, it’s all about getting the vision of what is possible. And to do that, we were looking at a number of case studies of entrepreneurs and social change leaders who have had amazing success using podcast guesting to achieve some or in some cases, all of that long list of possible accomplishments to massively uplevel their positioning, establish their authority and have a huge impact on where their business is, and who they are in the world, how they’re seen.
That peek behind the curtain that I offer – it gives people a chance to see the success that others are having. It gives us a template. It gives you a chance to see how they did it and the impressive things that they’ve accomplished in the last year through podcasting and how they Find that out into a larger multi modality media campaign to get widely known, respected, and, as they say, own their space.
The people that I profiled in the workshop, when they got started, they knew this was a strategic media campaign. They knew this was all about brand building. And then it was reputation management. They knew that each guest appearance should be a stepping stone that’s taking them closer and closer to the business goals. But they’re also aware that none of that happens by accident. They had goals they wanted to achieve with this tool of podcasting, and other media, and they had a plan to get there.
As for the participants of the podcast guesting prep school, we were able to get super clear on where they wanted to be in one year, what they wanted to achieve with this media campaign, and how using a mix of tools like podcasts, radio, TV, print, and speaking might help them to achieve that.
We also identified in addition to the top goals that they had, how they could be as individuals using podcast guest appearances to do that. The kinds of appearances that would help their campaign, also the kinds that would hurt their campaign. And some people were having realizations that that bid guesting that they’ve been doing so far was actually probably more harmful than helpful to their campaign and reputation.
We looked at the elements of their business there and their background, both personal and professional, that their guesting and their speaking should always align with. And
we identified complimentary speaking opportunities that would move them toward where they wanted to be.
With that thought of complimentary speaking opportunities, I was able to share an opportunity I had come into my feed for one of the participants, for her to apply to speak at a prestigious international conference in a field that she really wants to become known as we are both thrilled that she has submitted her application and a proposal to speak. And I for one cannot wait to hear the outcome and watch her soar for one of the other participants who had a vision of turning the brand story that she was going to be using in her podcast guest appearances, eventually into a TED talk, seeing that as a strong move for her for owning her space. And I agree it really would be, I was really glad to be able to share with her a hugely informative newsletter from a connection of mine, who is a TED Talk coach and expert.
So at basis, it’s all about planning your campaign. Where do you want this to take you? Where do you want to be in one year? Where do you want to be in five years? And ultimately, what do you want to achieve? You need to dream big. But you also need an action plan for those dreams. Because like I said, that is what your podcast guesting should be a well planned, an ongoing series of appearances that gets you seen and heard in the right places by the right people for years to come. Starting with podcast guessing and then translating that message and momentum to the other modalities that you add to your media mix.
